Executive Director

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:  MIDDLE PENINSULA JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER

The Middle Peninsula Juvenile Detention Commission (Merrimac Center) is seeking a leader to manage all aspects of a 48-bed secure juvenile detention facility in the Williamsburg area. The Executive Director reports to an engaged 18-member Board of Commissioners, works collaboratively with a talented staff of 50 full time employees, and oversees a $3.7 million annual operating budget. The Executive Director ensures the facility meets both the needs of approximately 30 juvenile offenders per month, and all requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the custody of youth in a secure facility. The position is responsible for supervision, staffing, planning, policy recommendation and interpretation, licensing, and programming.

A Master’s degree in social work, psychology or counseling and three years’ experience in a children’s residential facility, as well as four years’ full-time experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity for a total of seven years experience are preferred. High-level leadership experience, along with excellent human resource management and communication skills, are essential. 

The position requires an acceptable comprehensive background investigation that includes a criminal records check, drug test, polygraph, and proof of education. Individual cannot have a founded child abuse complaint anywhere in the United States and cannot use illegal drugs on or off the job.
